Hello NetPros,

I do hope you all keeping well and safe. I have a sceanario that I need you much valued not to mention esteemed input and opinion.

Background Information

Now for the last 4 months I have been working on a WAN (HQ + 5 Branches) solution for a CCTV system. The network has 2 models of switches namely

  • WS-C2960X-24PS-L  {15.4 W-per-port maximum, 370-W switch maximum}
  • WS-C2960X-48FPD-L  {30 W-per-port maximum, 740-W switch maximum}

The cameras are non-Cisco (Truvision) with the following power ratings:-

  • Domes            5.5 Watts
  • Bullets            14.5 Watts
  • PTZ internal    9 Watts
  • PTZ external   60 Watts

All the PTZs are independently  whereas the Domes & Bullets are powered via PoE. The cameras are set to record on motion (recording is done when the camera senses motion).

Recording is done locally as each branch has its own server, the branches are connected to HQ via MPLS.

The Challenge/Problems

As we went to commissioning, the client complained of missing recordings. After careful analysis I made the following observations:-

  • The cameras with issues (missing recording) were the bullet camera that have a 14.5W rating.
  • Those cameras with issues (missing recordings) were connected to the  WS-C2960X-24PS-L  switches.
  • All the affected WS-C2960X-24PS-L  switches had a high number of cameras 15-18.
  • Bullet cameras connected to WS-C2960X-24PS-L  switches with few cameras have NO issue.
  • Bullet cameras connected to WS-C2960X-48FPD-L  switches with few cameras have NO issue.

Additional Information

  • Configuration are standard on all switches (sample are attached)
  • IOS image across the network is c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E3.bin

As stated in the beginning, I kindly and humbly seek your valued opinion as to what could be wrong on the network end of things……

Regards & Respect

Shaqx

 - Configure a syslog server  on a all switches to central syslog-server. On a regular basis examine the logs on the syslog-server to start with, watch for anomalies , if any.

-- Each morning when I wake up and look into the mirror I always say ' Why am I so brilliant ? '
    When the mirror will then always repond to me with ' The only thing that exceeds your brilliance is your beauty! '

I have already set up the syslog  server but thus far I have not picked anything.

Thanks,

Regards and respect,

Hello,

in the topology diagram, it looks like all switches have one interface that is uplinked to a firewall. Post the output of:

sh interfaces x

where 'x' is the uplink port on the switch.
