Hi All,
We are going to upgrade WS-C2960XR-48FPD-I into 152-7.E7 version.
The switch is about 100 miles away from our office, so it would be great if we could successfully upgrade it remotely.
1)I searched the IOS software online, and here is the link for the download the suggested IOS
Software Download - Cisco Systems
2)I read the release notes for it as well. In release notes it says
Release Notes for Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR Switches, Cisco IOS Release 15.2(7)Ex - Cisco
the software images for 2960XR software file should be 'c2960xr-universalk9-mz.152-7E.bin'.
3)My question is the link in 1) , file name is 'c2960x-*', not 'C2960xr-*', there is no 'r' in the image file name.
Would anyone please help to suggest whether it is the right IOS for 'WS-C2960XR-48FPD-I' or not? Keen on making sure that the IOS is the proper one so that we could avoid on-site troubleshooting.
thanks

Hello @Coco Liu,
You have a WS-C2960XR-48FPD-l ; so your platform have the following additional capabilities in addition to the features in the 2960-X models:
-Dual-FRU power supply with integrated fan
-Layer 3 features with IP Lite feature set (2960-XR only)
-Configurable 8 queues per port (standalone)
-48 Ether channel groups
Featrure supported:
LAN Lite feature set has entry-level Layer 2 features and is targeted at midmarket deployments
LAN Base feature set comes with advanced Layer 2 features and is typically targeted at enterprise customers
IP Lite feature set comes with enterprise access Layer 3 features and is typically targeted at enterprise customers
The last letter in the product ID. If the last letter is “-L,” it’s LAN Base. If it’s “-LL,” it’s LAN Lite. If it’s “-I,” it’s IP Lite.
So your platform WS-C2960XR-48FPD-I with -l = IP lite.
All Cisco Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR Series Switches use a single universal Cisco IOS Software image for all SKUs. Depending on the switch model, the Cisco IOS image automatically configures the LAN Lite, LAN Base, or IP Lite feature set.

That is universal image, you are safe to upgrade.
Make sure you check what is the exting software installed is that Bin file or tar File ? (based on that make a decision what file to be used)
good Luck - I have done Lot upgrades remotely not that i am aware or encountered issue.
Suggestions :
1. take the config back up out of the box
2. give enough time for upgrade (and expected downtime since switch need to be rebooted)
3. if the switch is More than 1+year uptime, suggest to reboot, before ugprade the switch.
4. Make sure your upgrade path correct,. check any ROMMON Upgrade required (since you have not mentioned what version currently running)
5. if this is stack upgrade follow same instruction to load image other switches.

i think you should be ok, if you have booted with .bin file, then you can straight forward upgrade copy bin file, check the MD5, and change the boot variable , save and reload
