Edit: I was able to figure this one out thanks to another forum post.
The solution is to use the request platform software package install command
Hello everyone,
I'm working with a new stack of 3650s and I wanted to install a newer IOSXE 16.x on the master and then enable auto-upgrade so the other members can get the same IOSXE. Upon trying to install the newer image to the master, the system didn't have enough flash space to install it. I deleted the existing IOS and perhaps in the process deleted some necessary files I shouldn't have (not sure). Eventually I pointed the boot variable to the new .bin file and it worked, but it changed back to Bundle Mode.
Now I am trying to convert back to install mode with the command (exec mode) software expand running to flash
Unfortunately I no longer have the software command available to me.
Is there another way to access the convert method, or have I inadvertently deleted a file that enables the software command?
Just looking for any help at this point to get back on track. Thank you all.
Here are the current contents of flash:

Yes it is. The file is there.
The flash simply needs to be "cleaned" first before the Install Mode could begin.
WARNING: If this switch is going to be in a STACK, AVOID using 16.12.X.

Hi, thanks for the info.
Why do you recommend avoiding 16.12.X for a stack?
02-02-2022 09:28 AM
because lot of bugs and user experience is bad on those version.

3.6.X, 16.3.X, 16.6.X is a start.
If you need features, 16.9.X.
