Hallo,

In our company fiber optic ring network I would like to test what the bandwidth between each switch is. To test the individual parts of the network.

Could someone recommend a tool for this, preferably freeware.

Thanks,

Hi,

You can use iperf, very simple/easy to use.

The main problem is to have a NIC with a bandwith superior than your ring capacity, or you can launch the test from multiple machine.

Thank you Stephane, the tool works really great.

Do you also have some suggestions for a network mapping/monitoring tool?

Hi Guido,

You welcome.

Try this winning quadruple opensource software on linux:

Nagios/Nagvis/Weathermap/Cacti

Fine tuning & plenty docs & cisco template to use.

Is there an explanation that the iperf test shows a lower result than an actual client to client file transfer?

Also when I test the bandwidth over CAT6 cable and directly connected to an gigabit switch, iperf gets a maximum speed of arround 390Mbit/ps.

And also de server and client show a diffirent bandwidth speed.
