Are you mentioning about SVI here ?
the interface vlan with ip address configured ?
If yes except in L2 switches you can configure only one SVI interface with ip address configured for management purpose but in case of L3 switches u can configure as many as possible subjected to the limitations of the l3 switch...
If this doesn't solve your query do throw more lite on what you intended to post over here...

Thanks for your reply. I am trying to find out if instead of port based vlan id allotments, can cisco switches do IP based vlan? for example all machines having 1.1.1.x ip may fall into one vlan (irrespective of which switch ports they are connected) and all machines having 2.2.2.x fall into another vlan (irrespective of which switch port they are connected).
