I'm currently a computer science undergraduate and have always enjoy tinkering with network equipment. I own a Netgate firewall for the past couple years and have been managing my home internet through it. I recently decided to buy a catalyst 1200 to set up VLANs, learn more about networking.
During the switches initial configuration there was an optional setting for Administrative Default Gateway. Is this different from my regular gateway? Would I use this to set up a subnet for all my management interfaces?
Also, when I went through the Getting Started Wizard I changed everything and had the static route setup correctly in my firewall but it seemed like the switch was taking too long to change over to the new static address quickly. I waited a while and finally went over to the switch and held down the button on the front. Is this normal or did i miss a step?
If anyone has any tips on where to focus while working on getting the switch setup I'd appreciate it. I looked at the advanced options and was quite intimated.
