Which Catalyst series is best for High Performance Computing with about 24 nodes? I would prefer the one with lowest latency

Think it's worth having a look at doc Mohammed sent.

In addtion i would suggest the 4948 switch which is 48 ports wire speed designed for low latency throughput. They are specfically designed for aggregating servers and are often used in the data centre.

Appreciate it's 48 ports but that does give some room for expansion.

I thought that the 4948 can only use 44 ports of the 48, because these are used by the GBIC which are 4.

There are 48 ports of rj45, and 4 ports for sfp. However 45 - 48 are rj45 or sfp you have to tell it which media-type to use, (if you tell it sfp then the rj35s are not usable).
