managing a switch via telnet

Hi every body.

First of all , marry Christmas to all of you.

Let say we want to manage a switch remotely by telnet.  We assign the switch ip address as  int vlan2, ip address 2.2.2.2/24.  Does Vlan2 require that atleast one switch port be assigned to it i.e to vlan2 in order to manage switch remotely.  To put it another way,  can we manage a switch remotely that does have management vlan say vlan2  with ip address 2.2.2.2/24 but no port has been placed in that vlan2?

Hi Sara,

Yes, that is how inband management works.  You assign an SVI with 2.2.2.2/24 and you create vlan2 and added it to your trunk. In this case no physical port is required to bring up the vlan.

Hi Sarahr202,

There needs to be atleast one up/up interface within the VLAN for the VLAN SVI interface to be in an up/up state - one port in the VLAN should be in the connected state or there should be a  trunk running  to another switch.

If the SVI interface is created but the VLAN is not configured on the switch the SVI interface will be down/down  and If the VLAN is created on the switch but no port assigned to this VLAN is UP/UP the SVI becomes up/down.

And to manage a switch we use to have in band managemnet vlan that a vlan which is routed on network for managebilty of switches.

  Just think of it as another device in vlan 2 .  It needs a path to the layer 3 routing device whether its thru a trunk to that device or from a port  in vlan 2 connected to that l3 routing device . Also remember to set the default gateway to point to the l3 routing device...
