Multicasting across VLAN's

Hello All

 

I am having some trouble getting multicast working across VLAN's. We are using cisco nexus 5548's core switches with IP cameras connected to Cisco 2960-X stacks. Our video servers are on vlan 10 and our video vlan is vlan 40. On the 5548 I have used the commands as follows:

ip pim auto-rp rp-candidate Vlan40 group-list 224.0.0.0/4
ip pim auto-rp mapping-agent Vlan40
ip pim ssm range 232.0.0.0/8
ip pim auto-rp forward listen

 

then on the vlan 40 interface

ip pim sparse-mode

 

Here are the issues - we are in the middle of a network upgrade/IP change for this video network. The layer 3 interface of vlan 40 has a secondary IP and 2 hsrp entries with different IP's. I am not sure if this will affect the multicasting. also, do I need to add the "ip pim sparse-mode" to the server vlan that the servers are in?

 

When I do a show ip pim rp I see the entry of the "old IP" as the "RP" .

Can you add "ip pim sparse-mode" to vlan 10 SVI as well and test?

Can you post from the switch -

1) "sh ip igmp memberships"

2) "sh ip mroute"

is there currently a video server transmitting and if so what is it's IP address and is there a client trying to receive the stream and what is it's IP address ?

Hi Jon - thanks for the help. From what I know of the software (Genetec Omnicast) the camera will try to multicast then if that does work it will unicast the stream. Also to note if I am remotely logged into the server and bring up the stream the multicast works. I see a source IP of 224.16.20.116. If I am on my desktop (on vlan 201) the source IP of the stream is 10.20.10.40 - which is makes sense because this server is the directory server which controls all the streams etc...

 

The video server is: 10.20.10.40

Camera IP: 10.20.40.35 (224.16.20.116)

Client trying to receive: 10.20.201.21

 

sh ip igmp memberships (this didn't work on an N5K I provided "sh ip igmp groups")

Thanks for the outputs.

Unfortunately Nexus switches display everything differently from IOS so I will need to have a read of the Nexus command reference to understand exactly what the mroute output is showing me.

I notice in the mroute output that for the (*, G) entry for the group it is showing vlan 201 as an outgoing interface but there is no SPT entry ie. (10.20.30.45, G) entry which may or may not be an issue.

Can you clarify one thing ie. the camera transmits a multicast stream and the clients can request that stream.

So where exactly do the video servers come into this ?

Like I say I will have a read but it may be a while before I get back to you.

I got it working! There were some more application specific settings I need to apply in order to multicast. I thank you for your help.
