I'm mocking up a network in a lab, and for this purpose, i would like to nail up Ethernet interfaces. [at the moment, i'm using linksys mini-switches plus cross-over cables for this purpose ... but i'm running out of power sockets within reach of the wall-wart power supplies for these boxes]
at some point in the past, i thought that i could add 'no keepalive' to an interface stanza to accomplish this ... but i've tried this trick on a 7206VXR, a C6K, and a C4K, without success
i suppose i could build a stack of Ethernet loopback plugs ... then i would have to disable STP on these interfaces (otherwise they would see their own BPDUs coming back at them) ... which i could do ... but i was hoping for a simpler way
is there a configuration way to nail up 'line protocol' on an Ethernet (or Serial, for that matter) interface? obviously, this would be a bad idea in production ... but way useful in the test lab
