Hi,
I am trying to upload an image size 43 MB on a Cisco 6506 Switch, SUP 720.
the TFTP client that I have won't habdle large imgae size files.
anyone knows of a tftp client that can be downloaded and capable of handling large image size?
please advise.

Hi Masood,
If you are using a windows machine; the TFTP command will do the job and same goes for the cisco IOS.
You really dont need a specific TFTP client to upload or download TFTP files.
Thanks

I use Windows XP professional, so how can I use it without a TFTP client to upload a new imgae on this switch?
Thx,

shouldn't it be done from the switch/router prompt?
I would need the DOS commands to do this please.

Masood,
You should use a boot string. Here's an example below.
boot system flash bootdisk:s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF13.bin

I recommend tftpd32. It is a great TFTP server, and it does handle large image sizes.

Try 3Cdaemon from 3Com, make sure you get version 2 rev 10 (that's the most recent version).
3Cdaemon will support file uploads greater than 32 Meg .... like you'd need for the ISR routers.
It also has an FTP client / server and a syslog server in the same application ... DO NOT keep it running any longer than necessary (like a permanent application) because there are some security issues.
Good Luck

have you rebooted the switch? Can you please do a "show bootvar" and paste the output on here?
05-14-2008 08:49 AM
here is the bootvar output:
bdr2-ash-irides#sh bootvar
BOOT variable = ,1;
CONFIG_FILE variable =
BOOTLDR variable =
Configuration register is 0x2102
Standby is not present.
i uploaded the image and set the system boot flash:
the, reload
but the old image still showing up shown in the sh ver above!??
IS THIS SWITCH DIFFERENT? OR I HAVEN'T DONE SOMETHING RIGHT?
PLEASE ADVISE.

Masood,
You need to have a boot string in your config so that your switch will boot the IOS that you want it to boot. Please follow the example as posted earlier, and save the config, then past the show bootvar out again. Do you have redundant SUP engines?

this is what I get:
bdr2-ash(config)#boot system flash ?
WORD System image filename
bdr2-ash(config)#boot system flash
should I type bootdisk:?
it has disk0: and disk1: but when I try ot writ to them, I get error!!??
Pls advise.

Masood

I ran through this same senario uploading an image to a 6513 SUP 720 some time ago. The solution was to use FTP instead of TFTP. Just load the Windows FTP client to your PC, put the image file in the c:\inetpub\ftproot directory...I think and you are all set. Make sure the ftp directory has read permissions. Always use FTP instead of TFTP when available. Although FTP requies authentication Cisco will simly use the anyonomous automatically.
