We have 3 Cat 4500 switches on three floors teh 3rd floor switch connects to the 2nd and 4th floor switches ,but we are receiving an alert from monitoring tool that " Interface(314) Backup-1Gb-Ring is Down at least 2 min on Switch: SOM500-4510-3FL
the following output from "sh int status module 1 " shows the int 1/3 and 1/4 are 'inactive'local IT guy said If the status is inactive, the ports cannot be used and might lost the capability when he added 48-port blade into the 10th slot. Can someone help try to identify the issue here.

would you be able to post the port configs of g1/3 and g1/4?

the only time I've ever seen inactive is when a port was set to a vlan that didn't exist

on the switch, but vlan 1 can't be removed, so.....

chris

Hi Chris,

find the detais below

interface GigabitEthernet1/3
description Backup-1Gb-Ring
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk native vlan 500
switchport mode trunk
ip arp inspection trust
ip dhcp snooping trust
end

interface GigabitEthernet1/4
description Backup-1Gb-Ring
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk native vlan 500
switchport mode trunk
ip arp inspection trust
ip dhcp snooping trust
end

ok, thanks.

doesn't look like anything is out of the ordinary. So getting back to my last post, does vlan 500 exist on the switch?

Also do a sho int trunk. I don't see any vlan allowed/removed statements so I assume the default of 1-4094 allowed on

the trunk. If a sho int trunk shows no vlans allowed on the trunk, then I think that's your problem.

also, getting back to my last post, disregard about the vlan 1 statement. My error.

Gopineni,

ok, thanks. What I am not sure of is whether or not it shows no vlans allowed on trunk because it is inactive,

or if it is inactive because there are no vlans allowed on the trunk, I believe it is inactive because no vlans are allowed

on the trunk.

Are these links in use or connected to anything? If not, I would reset them to default config and shut them down

(default interface g1/3, default interface g1/5).

If they should be in use, and that's what you are troubleshooting, then

just adding vlans allowed should bring it back into service. Going by the descriptions, this might not be a good test

scenario, but you can always add a vlan that is not on the other trunks. For instance, add vlan 80 as an allowed vlan and

see if it comes out of inactive state.

Ok Chris will test and post the results.

Thank You.
