NTP assoc error packets

Hi all,

I'm setting up a FreeBSD box to be used as NTP server within my network, which most of the time will be a stratum 2 NTP.

While I do have some sync problems between the FreeBSD box and the Stratum 1 (work in progress due to a firewall between them) I do see some strange errors on my routers and switches while issuing "show ntp assoc det".

Please see below in bold:

While the assoc errors are incrementing, there is another odd thing: the reach value is most of the time 0 (0 the received updates are minimum - 377 constant updates). Now I'm not sure if this value is regarding the stratum 1 NTP or to my NTP (no firewall between these devices).

HI,

 

You need to fix the issues between the FREEBSD server and the stratum 1 appliance. You switches and routers will not sync with a server that is not synced

You switch or router has sent ntp packets but has not received any successful/valid returns, hence the reach is zero. The switch/router is having issues with the packets from you server.
