NTP msg on Catalyst 3560

Hi All,

Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this, but in the logs on one of my Catalyst 3560 switches that we are using for VLAN routing, I get an NTP PEER Unreachable, but for an IP Adress that isn't configured on the switch. Any ideas how/why I get this?

Here's the error message:

005925: .Sep  4 14:37:47.352: %NTP-4-PEERUNREACH: Peer 192.168.4.124 is unreachable
005926: .Sep  4 14:39:09.349: %NTP-4-PEERUNREACH: Peer 192.168.4.125 is unreachable
005927: .Sep  4 15:30:13.740: %NTP-6-PEERREACH: Peer 192.168.4.124 is reachable
005928: .Sep  4 15:31:27.667: %NTP-6-PEERREACH: Peer 192.168.4.125 is reachable

Both 124 and 125 are used on 2 windows NT servers running in VMs (VirtualBox) on a Ubuntu server.

Here's what is in the running config pertaining to NTP:

ntp logging
ntp clock-period 36027994
ntp server 192.168.20.1 prefer
ntp peer 24.124.0.251 prefer

192.168.20.1 is a 2901 router that is the fallback NTP server (stratum 16). I can indeed ping the 124 and 125 addresses but those aren't NTP servers.

Dante,

To resolve this issue you might have to remove theNTP configuration and reconfigured the same.

Second to findout the root cause:

Okay, what are those servers? It seems they broadcast such request and these routers are responding to it, can we pick one server look at it config and see if that is really the case?

Because routers with NTP logging enabled simply notifying of the event it may not TRIGGERING  that event is what I am after.

I think it's normal operational behavior that NTP syncs with external servers occasionally when the assign one flapped or re-sync during that time.

HTH

Hey Dante,

Can we get your output of

sh ntp status

With which server is the switch being sync??? And Regarding 124 and 125 server as told by Sharieff there might be any kind of updates being triggered from the Server so for the confirmation is it possible to shutdown the server and check if the error exist or not....??

I hope this will help you
