nvram:/ifIndex-table

Hello Netpro Experts!

I've received a brand new cisco router 2811, and during a bootup procedure there was this error:

% Error opening nvram:/ifIndex-table No such file or directory.

I've checked and there is no ifIndex-table in nvram. Is it important to have this file in nvram? Can the router work perfectly well without this file?

Please, can someone answer me. Thanks in advance!

Ivana

Hi Ivana,

Have a look at this document and try copy running starting on your device.

Verifying the IfIndex Persistence

To verify that the ifIndex is correctly enabled, you can view the content of ifIndex-table in the nvram.

Router # dir nvram:ifIndex-table
Directory of nvram:/ifIndex-table

    2  -rw-           0           ifIndex-table

126968 bytes total (114116 bytes free)

If the length is 0, then you omitted to execute copy running starting, which copies the ifIndexes allocation into the nvram. After doing so, you see the following:

Router # dir nvram:ifIndex-table
Directory of nvram:/ifIndex-table

    2  -rw-           283           ifIndex-table

126968 bytes total (114088 bytes free)

Hello Reza,

Thank you for your fast reply!

I read the document you send me, and I tried what you told me. After copy run start command I got again this output for nvram:

Router#dir nvram:ifIndex-table
%Error opening nvram:/ifIndex-table (No such file or directory)

Router#cd nvram:
Router#dir
Directory of nvram:/

  189  -rw-        1030                      startup-config
  190  ----          24                      private-config
  191  -rw-        1030                      underlying-config
    1  -rw-        2945                      cwmp_inventory
    4  ----          34                      persistent-data
    5  -rw-         595                      IOS-Self-Sig#1.cer

196600 bytes total (190374 bytes free)

Yesterday, I also type command snmp-server ifindex persist, and I only got persistent-data file in nvram. I also did no snmp-server ifindex persist but this file retain in nvram.

But, after all there commands, there is still no ifIndex-table in nvram. Will it be the problem in the network where Ciscoworks is used for network management?

Hello everybody,

Does anyone know do I have to do new RMA for the router 2811 because the router I got doesn't have ifindex table in the nvram? This is console output from the router:

Router#dir nvram:ifIndex-table
%Error opening nvram:/ifIndex-table (No such file or directory)

Router#cd nvram:
Router#dir
Directory of nvram:/

  189  -rw-        1030                      startup-config
  190  ----          24                      private-config
  191  -rw-        1030                      underlying-config
    1  -rw-        2945                      cwmp_inventory
    4  ----          34                      persistent-data
    5  -rw-         595                      IOS-Self-Sig#1.cer

196600 bytes total (190374 bytes free)

The same message appear during the boot of the router:

% Error opening nvram:/ifIndex-table No such file or directory

This router has to be in the hetwork where Ciscoworks is used for Network Management.

Please for reply!

Thanks in advance,

Ivana.
