OSPF multi-area or single-area ?

Hi,

I'm trying to make an "old" network redundant. Up untill now it was star shaped, each edge router only had one link to the core and we used static routing.

But now it's going to look mostly like in the attached drawings and I wish to implement OSPF

It's a campus/metro network and all the links are 1Gbps

My problem is...I can't decide what to do...multi-area or single area.

So far I thought of either doing a single area or the edge routers = one area, the core routers + an ASA = area 0. Or maybe some other way?

Could someone please give me some advice?

Thanks,

Dan

Hi Dan,

For right now since you only have very few devices a single area 0 is fine, but to enable you for feature growth and not wanting every singe edge router gets all the routes, I would go with area 1 (NSSA) for the edge routers and area 0 for the core.  This way, your core routers (ABRs) send the edge routers only a default route and not all the routes.
