I could not find an extreme newsgroup...so thought I would query here:
I know...extreme, the eyes of the beast! I never realized it, but when you get a Cisco cert and land your IT job, do not be surprised when your also expected to know foundrys, juniper, extreme, ciena, etc......and if you dont know it, well....welcome to the industry
I am trying to trace down a device on a network. I know its IP and MAC, but it is a small 8 port Milan sw that needs the location code, SNMP, etc settings put in correctly. So I log in, ping the device from the core sw/rtr (summit 24e).... and here is its info...(see below). Can I find what device is plugged into port 17 w/o an onsite visit?(or if its my device in question)
0585-MDF-01:47 # ping 10.96.192.234

yes I know what you mean, we support Jiniper, Cisco and Extreme, although Extreme's are much more fiddly to configure. You could try googling the mac address to find out who the manufacturer is, eventually you should find the right manufacturer. We use a free product called Netdisco, which basically tells you which port and on which switch, a device is connected. It uses a Linux image that you can download, I dont think its too difficult to set up, theres plenty of guides. But for a quick fix, just google the mac address.

I will try NetDisco, the downloadable file is about 450 MB.
The piece of gear I was looking for was attached directly to my device, thats why for port 17 it didnt show me anything else. Plus its a APC PDU, so ddint respond to EDP/CDP.
Thanks for your input,
Jimmy
I noticed on the website it said:
"Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), Foundry Discovery Protocol (FDP), Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), and SynOptics Network Management Protocol (SONMP) optionally provide automatic discovery of the network topology."
Any idea if it handles EDP (Extreme Discovery Protocol)?
