Hi Community,
I have a WS-C4510R+E switch, I want to update the IOS.
What would be the correct procedure for updating via USB and FTP?
It is a single WS-C4510R+E switch, in that scenario how long would it take for the switch to fully load with the new IOS when restarting it and be fully operational?

- If you talk about upgrading via USB or FTP then that only applies to getting or copying the image to bootflash: of the device I don't think there will be delays in time for booting the new image w.r.t to the previous (you don't boot on USB or via FTP) . Most important is reading the Release Notes of the version you want to install , look for dependencies and on previous version and also search for ROMMON with find in the browser to look for compatibility.

Hi @marce1000
I checked the correct IOS and the release, there is no problem on that part.
but I want to know how long it will take for the WS-C4510R+E switch to load with the new IOS when it is restarted?
it is only a WS-C4510R+E switch with 6 network cards and 2 processors.

- Boot time is the same as with the current OS .

Hi,
For a fully loaded 4510 with 2 Sups, it takes about 20 minutes to reload and run all the diagnostics if the existing IOS is not very old. If you are going from a very old version to a new version, it may take 25 to 30 minutes as it has to upgrade other electronic components.
Also, doing it using USB is much faster. Before doing anything, make a good backup of the config.
-Load the new OS into a USB flash
-Copy the OS to the flash of both Sups
-Undo the old boot variable
-Set the new boot variable
-Verify the boot variable to make sure the new one is configured
-Save config
-Reload the switch

Thanks for the information.
Could you share the commands for the process of running the copy of the new IOS to both processors?

Hi,
The commands to load the ios to the primary and backup sups are as follows:
copy usb0: bootflash:<ios version>
copy usb0: slavebootflash:<ios version>

From what I see, those 2 commands are used when I have 2 WS-C4510R+E switches in VSS.
In this case, it is only one switch, so I would understand that only the first command would apply, is that correct?

What is the Supervisor Engine used?
What is the current IOS version? What version is the intended upgrade meant to land on?

Any specific reason for planning to upgrade old release.
cat4500es8-universal.SPA.03.06.04.E.152-2.E4.bin is very old release (2016), and firmware 15.1(1r)SG5 (2014)
It is recommended, you go for new release.
Here is upgrade procedure from cat4500es8-universal.SPA.03.03.02.XO.151-1.XO2.bin to cat4500es8-universal.SPA.03.11.07.E.152-7.E7.bin and firmware upgrade from 15.1(1r)SG5 to 15.1(1r)SG18 upgrade.
firmware filename : firmwareupgrade-151_1r_SG18.SPA
New IOS file name : cat4500es8-universal.SPA.03.11.07.E.152-7.E7.bin
just giving example for cat4500es8-universal.SPA.03.11.07.E.152-7.E7.bin, you can use recommended IOS as per your suitable environment.
you can upgrade new software by changing the boot variable for IOS and firmware in single reload at same time.
Copy new IOS and new firmware (firmwareupgrade-151_1r_SG18.SPA) in bootflash and slavebootflash
Check the redundancy
Change the boot variable for new IOS and Firmware (ROMMON) save and reload.
Hope this will help
