I'm aware that the message "C4K_EBM" 5 "HOSTFLAPPING" relates to Spanning Tree Loops.

If a lot of these message occur then clearly there is a problem, but would the occasional message be expected and not necessarily be a problem?

Please help.

While it is always seen during bridging loops but just seeing it is not neccessarily a bridging loop. Once classic scenario where you would see it intermittently is in a wireless environment when a device roams from one Access point to another. However, if you are seeing it all the time, it needs to be investigated further.
