Replacing the 3rd switch in 3750 stack

Hello,

Our initial plan was to add the 4th switch in an existing stack BUT now we will be replacing our 3rd  stack member with new switch.  the current stack has no  switch priorities set.

STEP -1

on a new switch  before connecting to the stack

switch-3(New) :  switch 3 provision ws-c3750x-48p

save and power off

Question here : when i issued the command on new switch for provisioning , it took it., but it shows 2 commands now

Switch/Stack Mac Address : 04da.d226.0800
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
----------------------------------------------------------
*1 Master 04da.d226.0800 1 1 Ready
3 Member 0000.0000.0000 0 1 Provisioned

STEP -2

change switch priorities as all 3 members are on default priority

SWITCH#SH SWITCH
Switch/Stack Mac Address : 00e1.7d67.65d0
H/W Current
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
----------------------------------------------------------
*1 Master 00e1.7d67.65d0 1 1 Ready
2 Member 1003.ca7e.3a00 1 1 Ready
3 Member fe79.477e.f040 1 1 Ready

priority will change as follow

switch-1 : switch 1 priority 15

switch-2 : switch 2 priority 14

switch-3 : switch 3 priority 13

save and restart

Step 3

Removal of 3rd member

Power off the stack member to be removed.

Remove the stackwise cable from the switch.

Issue the following command on the stack master: no switch 3 provision ws-c3750x-24p

step-4

Connecting stack cables with the new switch and power on the switch.

Any thing which is being missed here as a step or precaution.

Another question/concern is do we provision the ports on new switch before even adding in stack ?

Regards,

B

Ok, so both are the same except one is a 48 port and the other one is 24 and the licenses are the same which is good.

After changing the priority and save and before restarting make sure to issue the "show boot" command to make sure the boot variable is correct for all switches.

No, once the switch is part of the stack, you can then configure the ports as needed.

Hi,

So, you are removing a 3750 and replacing it with a 3750X?

Does the new switch have the exact same software version installed as the existing stack?

What is the license level on the 3750X?

The new switch WS-C3750X-48PF-S.. the existing switch being replaced ( as 3rd member) is  WS-C3750X-24P-S

Existing enviroment

sh lic

Index 1 Feature: ipservices
Period left: Life time
License Type: Permanent
License State: Active, In Use

sh lic on a new switch

Switch#sh license
Index 1 Feature: ipservices
Period left: Life time
License Type: Permanent
License State: Active, In Use
License Priority: Medium
License Count: Non-Counted
License Priority: Medium
License Count: Non-Counted
