Resilient Ethernet Protocol (REP), Node in ring lose power

Hi

I just want to find what will happen to the ring if a node(switch) within the segment loses power. i had a issue where if a fiber goes down the ring does what it is design to do but if a node loses power then it doesn't route devices any longer that is on vlan 1 but switch management on vlan 130 works just fine.

I read the following restrictions for cisco:

  • REP can manage only a single failed port within the segment; multiple port failures within the REP segment causes high loss of network connectivity.

if a node loses power it will give to port failures one on each side of the ring, does this mean that a lose of power in a REP ring falls with in the restriction.

We had an issue in a REP ring, where a switch did lose power, and a L2 Loop occurred.   Looking in to this further we noticed that at the time of implementation, they REP Admin Plan was defined in the configuration, but not added to the global vlan database on each switch in the ring.    I have got a change to remediate this, and will be doing a link failure test, and a switch failure test as part of the test plan.

I am hoping that all links around the ring will become open, and the failed switch will break the loop, and when the switch is powered back up, the ALT port election will begin using the Hardware Flooding Layer

Does anyone have an answer to @rayyaanfayker0006 question ?

As far as I know, when a single link fails in a REP topology (in your case you have a ring) the ALT port stops blocking all VLANs and starts sending packages, this way there is no connectivity loss. But if a device that belongs to a ring (which means that 2 ports belong to the REP segment) looses power this device will be incommunicated until the power is restored since there is no feasible way to reach it. However the rest of the devices should not be affected since the rest of the ports are all in OPEN state (no matter where the ALT port is set or the "preferred" option is configured).

Hope this helps,

Regards
