Rx power low alarm

Hello, on our WS-C4500X-32, we are getting constant Rx power low alarms:

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: STANDBY:Te1/1/18: Rx power low alarm; Operating value: -40.0 dBm, Threshold value: -12.4 dBm.

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te2/1/20: Rx power low alarm; Operating value: -40.0 dBm, Threshold value: -12.4 dBm

is this anything to be concerned about ?

Thanks for any comments.

Yes.  This means a potential layer 1 issue.  Could be the SFP, could be the patch cable or the fibre run.  Either way, needs to be checked.

I agree with Leo. However, when we see this message on our c4500-Xs it's almost always because

  • the link is down and a SFP is plugged in (shutdown the port or remove the SFP if the link is not used)
  • a third-party SFP is used at one side of the connection (show idprom interface <interface>)
