Schematic of Router Memory

In an attempt to understand the inner workings of a router, in particular the series 2500, my question is in regard to flash and nvram.  Is flash and nvram two actual differing circuit boards, or is it more like the relationship between bios and cmos?  Can both flash and nvram be replaced - or atleast physically and separately identified within the router box?

Thank you.

Hey Robert,

See if you can access this link. It's public. Any issues with access, you may have to contact web-help@cisco.com

I believe this is the closest thing to a schematic you are looking for:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/2500/2501/software/user/guide/maint.html

It doesn't identify the NVRAM area as this is not a replaceable part, generally identified by a FRU or Field Replaceable Unit. Hardware that can be replaced will have an orderable FRU or part number so to speak.

This link discusses the usages of each area:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps233/products_tech_note09186a0080094e93.shtml

and there's some notes on Memory configurations here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/2500/2501/hardware/installation/guide/2500IMProdOver.html#wp1625

HTH somewhat

Eugene.
