Hi
I've recently inhierited a network which relies on a couple of SGE2000 network which has multiple vlans configured, unfortunatley i am unable to get to the management ip of the device to look at the config. I have put in a serial cable it see that the management IP is 192.168.1.254 on vlan 1, but when i plug a device into the swithc and give it a IP on that range (both untagged and vlan 1 tagged) it is unable to access the MGMT IP.
anyone got any advice on where i have gone wrong??
Thanks
dave

Hi dave,
but when i plug a device into the switch and give it a IP on that range (both untagged and vlan 1 tagged) it is unable to access the MGMT IP.
VLAN 1 is not tagged by default.
What do you mean, you can't ping that address? or you can't telnet/ssh to it?
Regards.
Alain.

Hi Cadetalain
I am unable to access telnet, SSH, or use http or https to get to the config of the switch
using the network Configuration ping utility from the serial console it is unable to ping the machine which i have attached to the switch.
I'm sure i'm missing something simple, but not sure what
Thanks
Dave
(the switch is in layer 2 mode, should this make a difference?)
n.b. this is the result of a tracert from the swith
TraceRoute IPv4
===============
IP Address:
192.168.1.10
Status: Tracing the route to 192.168.1.10 , 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
Trace complete.
Results: Net unreachable.

Hi,
First is int VLAN up|up? ---> show ip int br | in Vlan
Second is the port where machine is connected in the same VLAN ? ----> sh int XX switchport where XX is interface id of port connecting to machine.
Post results here so we can see which further commands could help resolve the problem.
Regards.
Alain.

Hi Alain
Well this seem to be the issue, i don't have proper CLI access though the serial, only this strange switch menu, so i can't see which ports are tagged with what vlan. (see attached screenshot)
The switch has multiple vlans on there, but in this simple menu system it is only showing the default vlan (see another screenshot)
So i'm a little lost on where to go
Thanks
Dave

Hi,
On your machine is the switch appearing in the arp cache? ----> arp -a

Alain.

also i get no recieved packets on that NIC either

Hi,
Can you post ipconfig/all, route print and the failing ping to the switch IP
On which OS are you, if Windows 7 or vista what is your network profile for the NIC: public or private? if private change it to public and retry
Regards.
Alain.

Hi Dave,
Have you looked at the port configuration screen from the main menu, and made sure that the port you are trying to access the switch is in VLAN 1.
The screen you are getting is the only screen you get via the console cable.
I can't remeber all the steps need but could get one that I have in our stores and talk you through it.
Thanks

Hi Ronnie
The port config menu doesn't show any details for vlans, just the flow control, speed/duplex , auto negociate and enable and disable. Please see screenshot
The port i am connected to (6) is enabled and is showing as a GIG connection on my attached device (again see attached screenshot)
normally i would reboot the router and then reset, but as it's integral to a network which can't have down time (this will change when i get access!) i'm unable to do this
Thanks
Dave

That option is not in the system, what you could try is to do a backup of the config via TFTP you will then be able to see what IP you have.
Another question is the system mode in layer 3 if it is you could try the IP address of your default gateway.
