We need to span a port on a Cat-6506 switch. Can a source port and a desination port be on two different VLANs or do they have to be on the same Vlan?

thanks.

You should be able to keep the ports on seperate vlans and still run the span session. I am able to do this with the cat switches at org. that I work for without any issues.

One side note: If the span tool is actually participating in the sessions, that is it acts as a client as well as a protocol analyzer, then I would keep the source and dest ports in the same vlan.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Thanks for your response. The customer is also asking to enable the inpkts on the destination port and I have read it could cause a bridging loop because no STP is running on the desitation SPAN port. How risky is to enable this feature?

thanks again.

You should be OK if you're carefull what you connect to the port. Keep the connection to a single host and you're fine.
