spanning tree root bridge

can someone explain the ramifications to existing production traffic going through a 4500 switch if the switch is made the root bridge for a specific VLAN? what sort of disruption am I looking at? I assume Spanning tree recalculates, but I've never tested what it does when it happens.

Layer2 forwarding will change causing slight disruption if the packets were in transit.

It will be a slight disruption and the length of time depends on how many switches are doing the calculation and where the packets are coming or going. Hard to predict a hard figure, best to do it off-hours.

Hi

In addition to Edison's points if your running PVST+ it should only have an effect on that specific vlan rather than all vlans.

Agree with Edison though, i always do this sort of thing out of hours.
