Solved: Stackwise update question

We have a 3750 (master) and 3750G in a stackwise configuration. We want to add a new 3750X to the stack. We downloaded C3750-ipservices-k9-mz-122-55-SE7 to install. The plan was to update the present stack so that when the 3750X is added we don't get a "version mismatch" or hopefully the version on the 3750X is the same version. We are planning on retiring the 3750 because it is end of life in 2014 after the stack is fully up.

Immediate problem with this is the tar file for the version we want to install is over 16 megs and the 3750 has a 16 meg flash. So updating the 3750 would be an issue. I could just tftp the bin file but from what I read the auto update will then not work. So them maybe the course of action is to power off the 3750 so the master responsibilities goes to the 3750G, Update it with the tar file, then connect the 3750X and hope that the 3750G can synch with the 3750X.

Does this seem reasonable or is there a better course of action? We might want to retask the 3750 in the near future, but not with the stack.

NOTE: Yes we did buy IP-services when we bought the 3750X.

This doesn't make any sense.

12.2(55)SE7 is a "full" IOS.

To decide what version you should be looking for, you need to look at your least-common-denominator. In your case, the switch model with the lowest amount of flash memory.

So, let's say that you want to use 12.2(58)SE2. Your 3750G, with 32 mb flash, will accept the IOS but your remaining switch with only 16 mb flash will NOT accept the IOS.

After you reboot the stack, the entire stack will "split".

IOS version 12.2(55)SE7, TAR or BIN, is supported in 3750 with only 16 mb flash.

You need to down load the c3750-ipserviceslmk9-tar.122-55.SE7.tar file this version will fit on a switch with only 16M

Your right. Powered off the 3750 so the 3750G could become the master. Updated the 3750G with ipservices-122-55(SE7). Hooked up the 3750X and UGH! it has ipuniversal-122-58(SE2) - Version mismatch. Powered off 3750X and updated the 3750G to ipservices-122-58(SE2). Powered up the 3750X and everyone is happy.
