Straight patch lead or a cross over patch lead?

I am buying a patch panel and patch leads so that I connect between my ADSL and various computers.  Should I buy a normal Cat6 patch lead (Shielded STP CAT6 patch leads conform to the TIA/EIA-568-B specification, wired to the T568A pinout specification) or a cross-over patch lead (CAT6 UTP Crossover Cables)?

Hi brabhaharan,

If your topology looks something like this:

[Switchport of ADSL] -> [Straight-Cable] -> [Patch-Panel] -> [ xxx ] -> [PC]

xxx has to be a straight through cable.

Crossover-Cabels are only intented to be used in one of the following scenarios:

[Router] ---[Crossover-Cable]--- [Router]

[Switch] ---[Crossover-Cable]--- [Switch]

[Client-PC] ---[Crossover-Cable]--- [Client-PC]

This is because of the design of the Ports, where you have by default two conductors for receiving and two conductors for transreceiving (=sending).

Florian

Won't make any difference.

A lot of PC/Laptops now have MDI/MDI-X as a feature.  Straight-through patch cable is cheaper than cross-over cable.
