Platform is a WS-C2960-48TC-L. Began by troubleshooting CRC errors on our COO's drop. Interface configuration is a Fa port that was forced 100 Full. He was still getting errors after I replaced both the drop and patch cord. To rule out premise wiring I patched him to a port on another switch and he was functional again.
I'm currently duplicating the issue on a test machine on the same problematic port(0/44); however, I'm noticing 3 blocks of 3 other ports that are also showing errors. Configurations are also forced 100 Full on these as well. See output below.
The three blocks of three interfaces had me thinking it may be isolated to an ASIC, but I didn't find any correlation.
Am I dealing with a switch that is about to fail ??

The line errors are caused by the "Collision fragments". Collision fragments commonly occurs when you hard-code the speed and duplex settings of an interface.

The other ports that other users machines are on are all configured at 100 Full. I do this to avoid half-duplex negotiations. Additionally, the functional port that I moved him to on our other switch is forced 100 Full and is non-erroneous. I can also duplicate the issue with different NIC hardware on the machine side.
05-21-2014 06:26 PM
Ok, so try this.
1. Clear the counters;
2. The set interface to auto-duplex/auto-speed;
3. Ensure the PC's NIC is also auto/auto.

It does function without error when I configure in the manner you suggested. I've always forced on the switch and utilized a-duplex and a-speed on client side to prevent half duplex negotiations. This is the first instance where the client side has negotiated half duplex. Strangely enough when I move them to the other switch (a 3560) the client side doesn't negotiate half on that switch.
05-22-2014 07:25 PM
Forgot to mention that you can use the command "speed auto 100".
05-21-2014 04:02 PM
My guess is your COO's nic card is set as auto for speed and duplex and you have the switchport hardcoded. Can't do that , that's causes all kinds of errors and slowness on the ports. Both the switchport and the nic card settings must match. These days unless you are having a specific problem with a given nic everything should be left as auto .

Anndd you're both correct. To rule it out I forced 100 Full client side. Errors disappeared. So it seems that I'm dammed either way. What is the best way to prevent half-duplex negotiations happening when you can't force on the client side ? This is the first instance I've ran into where this occurred on the system side instead of the switch side.
