Switchports green, amber, not working?

Hi,

I have connected some switches and there are a few weird things. I used a straight trough utp CAT5E cable.

WS-C3560-48PS-S (DIS-02) Fa0/1 - Fa0/1 WS-C2950-24 (ACCESS-02) (Link does not come up)

WS-C3560-48PS-S (DIS-02) Fa0/25 - Fa0/1 WS-C2950-24 (ACCESS-02) (Link does come up. amber LED on 3560 and green LED on the 2950)

WS-C3560-48PS-S (DIS-02) Fa0/1 - WS-C3560-48PS-S (DIS-03) Fa0/10 (Link does come up. green LED on DIS-02 and amber LED on  DIS-03)

I checked the post of the switches and seemed to be good (show post)

The switch is autosensing.

Solution: I made a crossover cable and now the ports come up.

Other question: Does both switches have to have auto sensing ports to make it work with a straight trough cable?

Hi Kajo,

Now a days the all new cisco switches have a auto sensing feature means you can connect either cross over cable or straight cable the switches will auto negotiate with each other.

But in older days we should use only crossover while connecting switch-->switch or router-->router in other words same devices. But now no need latest devices have auto negotiage feature.

Only one device.  Most modern NICs have it though.

   Did you do any hardcode(speed/duplex) on Fa0/1 on WS-C3560-48PS-S (DIS-02)?  Auto-MDIX supported on one side should work.

   Please post the output of command below:

This is the output of the command on DIS-02:

Name : Fa0/1

Administrative Auto-MDIX: on

Operational Auto-MDIX: off

Name : Fa0/25

Administrative Auto-MDIX: on

Operational Auto-MDIX: on

It is true that i hardcoded the speed and duplex on all switches.

When i turned the port to it's default settings this is the output and the link is up (green):

Name : Fa0/1

Administrative Auto-MDIX: on

Operational Auto-MDIX: on

Now i can use both cables, straight through and crossover.

Someone must've set the speed/duplex setting of the 3560 to disable MDI/MDI-X.

The ports turning amber resemble that they are blocked using STP.
