On doing trace route I could see that destination IP given in the trace route command is always shown as first hop ? I believe, the default GW of the router should be the first HOP ? Can any one please help me with this ?

Do you have some kind of Firewall like Zonealarm installed on machine ?

This would be normal case if you are trying to trace something which is found on directly connected .
where is your source and destination connected ? on same switch or multiple hops aways ?

Its same even if trace to public IP like 8.8.8.8
