traceroute can be used to measure speed in network

Hi we all have experience in our network slow. If we use simple one -- traceroute to test which router or link is slowest one among several devices, it can tell us how long each hop would take to locate where the problem is. Can we think this is good way to try to solve the problem? if so, do we have other better way for this issue? Thank you

Traceroute will help you gather some information on every hop going out of the network. There could be various factors causing your speed of your network to drop. IE: if you on a 2mbps line and have 5 users on streaming youtube; you will tend to slow down the entire network.

1. Perhaps if the network is slow; log onto the gateway router and go over the stats to determine if any of the clients connected to network is maybe causing a bottleneck;

2. Use a speed test tool to determine if you are getting the speeds promised by your ISP.

3. After your cleared up all factors from your side that could be possible causes of slow internet. Contact your ISP and let them diagnose from their side.

Hi @wfqk

 If I were facing slowness on my network and trace route indicate that inside my network is ok but on the service provider it is not, I'd call them even though they might not accept trace route as a valid evidence.

 However, there're better option.  IPerf for example is a good option.  But you need to have a server or a client somewhere on a remote site or on the Internet.

-If I helped you somehow, please, rate it as useful.-

Traceroute can help to find L3 device with big latency, however, if you have some troubles on L2 (broken SFP, long copper Ethernet providing an errors, etc), traceroute will be useless. Best way - find a problem area with traceroute and have a look around on interfaces.
