Traceroute mac

Hello team,

i have come across a command which is most often used

traceoute mac X.X.X.X  X.X.X.X

Does anybody known how this command works ?

Also some time we use the same mac address to find out where the host/end user is associated. Why do we use same mac address

eg tracroute 1234.1234.1234 1234.1234.1234

Any help is appreciated

This is a layer 2 traceroute. The two arguments are source and destination mac address. Take a look at the following link for further explanation.
