Post the complete output to the command "dir".

SW1#dir
Directory of flash:/

You can follow the below guide : (Step-by-Step Procedure for the 3550 with Use of the CMS Image (.tar File))

with option /overwrite

  • /overwrite

If you choose to overwrite or replace the current version of software with the newer version, the command syntax is archive download-sw /overwrite tftp://tftp_server_ip/file_name . This document uses this overwrite option.

Note : take the configuration backup out of the box, do this upgrade in a maintenance window, since switch required a reboot.

Also, suggest to have console access - you can see booting process and upgrade process and capture the logs if any issue. it is easy to diagnosis the issue.

i dont want to overwrite the existing firmware in case i want to rollback , will having small remaining storage when i shift to the new firmware cause any issues?

Post the complete output to the command "dir flash:/c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5".

You need to do some ground and homework to clean up the flash, need to delete unnecessary files to clean.

Even if you clear all the files you still have a space issue, you do not have any other option, other than overwriting install option, also suggested doing these steps preparing an alternative plan in case of any issue so you can use xterm or TFTP to boot with the old image.

Aside from what Balaji said (use the "/overwrite" option), see those files that end with ".rename"? Delete them using the command "del /f /r flash:*.rename". This should free up some space.

". . . can i uplaod the new image and leave little flash space left?"

Usually, yes you can. Lack of flash free space is generally only a problem to anything you wish to write later to flash. The most common "unexpected" usage would be a crash dump.
