Hello folks!

I have to upgrade the IOS of catalyst 3650, but this switch is using file .pkg, I alway use only .bin.

When I try to download the new image, is appear only .bin files.

I found this guide: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3650/software/release/3se/system_management/configuration_guide/b_sm_3se_3650_cg/b_sm_3se_3650_cg_chapter_010101.html

But they don´t say if I have to download other .pkg or if is possible just download the .bin file and change the boot sequence with this nem file.bin.

Today I have "System image file is "flash:packages.conf""

Thanks

Marcio

Hi;

To upgrade 3650/3850 switches you have 2 options:

  • Install Mode
  • Bundle Mode

The Bundle mode is same what you are looking for:

Please review the Upgrading Cisco IOS XE Software: Bundle Mode

  • Download the bundle file (.bin) to local storage media.
  • Configure the boot system global configuration command to point to the bundle file.
  • Reload the switch.

Thanks & Best regards;

Hello ahmedshoaib

My concern is about to change this mode. Today I believe the switch is in the install mode and if I use the Bundle mode, are there any problem?

My question is because in the .pkg there are a lot of files.

Hi;

I don’t face any issue during Cisco 3850 switches IOS upgrade as Bundle mode.

Once switch upgrade the IOS as bundle mode you can covert the switch from bundle mode to install mode.

Thanks & Best regards;

I made the upgrade and change the boot system image.

After boot, I received the follow message:

"The System is using a non-recommended Boot mode.
Not all features may be available in this boot mode.
Please check the product configuration guide"

It´s normal?

Hi;

You can convert the Bundle Running Mode to the Install Running Mode via software expand running to flash: command.

For further detail you can found the link you share in your initial post.

Thanks & Best regards;

Ahmedshoaib,

The switch was working in packet mode, the I download the new image .BIN to flash and change the boot system:

FROM: flash: packages.conf

TO: flash:cat3k_caa-universalk9.SPA.03.06.05.E.152-2.E5.bin

I made the configuration to change from install mode to bundle with the commands:

no boot system

boot system switch all flash:image.bin

reload

Now I still have the msg:

"The System is using a non-recommended Boot mode.
Not all features may be available in this boot mode.
Please check the product configuration guide."

Do I have to worry about it?
