Upgrade to 10 GB

I have (2) 6509 Core switches, (4) 4506 and (2) 4503 edge switches. Would like to upgrade to 10GB, provide redundancy (no single point of failure) and link aggregation (for maximum throughput).

What supervisor modules should I purchase? GBIC\SFP's should I use? Firmware and IOS levels?

And any other thoughts.

For the (2) 6509, I have the 720 3B and I have a WS X6416 GBIC, with 16 ports. Currently, have a port channel for (4) 1GB ports between 6509's. Would like to make this (4) 10GB port channel between the 6509's.

For the (4) 4506, I have the WS X4013+ Sup Eng II plus with 2 ports. Currently, have (1) 1GB port going to each 6509. Would like to make this a port channel with (2) 10GB port channel to each 6509. So I would need a module with a minimum of (4) ports per 4506.

For the (2) 4503, I have the WS 4013+ TS Sup Eng II with 8 SFP ports. Currently, have (1) 1GB SFP going to each 6509. Would like to make this a port channel with (2) 10GB port channel to each 6509. So I would need a module with a minimum of (4) ports per 4503.

Does this configuration work?

I'm sooooo going to get flak with this.  Here goes.

DON'T purchase anything for your 6500 yet.  The reason is because in mid-June 2011 Cisco, during the Cisco Live 2011 Las Vegas, will announce the new VS-Sup2T.  It's the new supervisor engine of the 6500 that will support up to 2Tb.

Currently, the Sup720 will support the following 10Gb cards:  6704, 6708 and the 6716.  All three cards have Distributed Feature Card version 3 (DFC3).  The Sup2T will not support DFC3 and will support the newer DFC4 (because of the new licensing architecture and support pay-as-you-grow).  Only the 6704 and the 6716 can be upgraded to the DFC4 but the 6708 has the DFC3 wielded into the motherboard.

So this is why I'm going to recommend to anyone reading this post to consider upgrading to VS-Sup2T.

For the 4500, unless you have the Sup7 card, I wouldn't bother with 10Gb.  The earlier models may have 10Gb ports but to push 10Gb falls with the Sup7.
