Trying to do an upgrade on firmware for a Catalyst 9500 from 16.12.04 to newer 17.1.1.  Using this article for guidance: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst9500/software/release/16-12/release_notes/ol-16-12-9500.html

The article mentions doing a "request platform software package clean" command.  However, my switch doesn't have that command available at all.  Not sure how to proceed.  Any advice is appreciated.

HQN-C9500#request platform software ?

If that command not available :

1. Look what mode the switch installed - bundle or install mode ( show version and show boot - will guide you)

2. that clean up command used so you can clean the files to free the flash so you can install new IOS XE ( you can post output of dir flash: )

is this part of SVL or Standalone Device ?

IOS XE 17.1.1 is quite old, suggest to look for upgrade to 17.9.4a cisco recomended one.

read the release notes and upgrade steps :

Try the command "install remove inactive".

17.1.1 is one of the worse choices of version to upgrade to.  And TAC should not be giving this sort of recommendation unless they want the 9500 to be crashing most of the time.
