Hi,

In many articles I have read that vlans provide secrity and in some articles vlans does not provide any kind of  security, I am confused about vlans security,

Is vlans provide any kind of security? If yes then what kind of security it's provide?

Also what is the pros and con's of vlans in network?

Thanks

Hi

One of the benefits provided by the Vlans is network segmentation, for example if you dont have segmented your network all the users will be working on the same broadcast domain, so any user can be able to have access to every computer or data on the same network. For that reason is best practice to create vlans for the different areas on a company.

Now you can provide security a segmented networks using ACL, Vlan ACL, firewalls, etc.

In concept, for security, they're similar to separate physical LANs.  I.e. generally you need L3 to move between them, and L3 often has many security capabilities that can be taken advantage of.  For example, L3/L4 ACLs.

Additionally, unlike real physical LANs, some device VLAN support "private VLANs" to provide additional security between ports at L2.

Unlike separate physical LANs, as VLANs often share the same physical devices, there have been security holes or bugs that allow some form of "VLAN hopping".

Again, much of the pro and cons of physical LAN in a network, but with the pro/con that multiple VLANs can share the same device(s).
