Hi Carl
You need to do the config accordingly in your PIX.
do refer this link for the same.

so if we have a 0.0.0.0 0.0.0. route in there, all traffic goes out the tunnel, if I want to see other machines on my lan, so I need to start narrowing down the routes from the client rather than a default route, would this then allow me then to access internet at home ?

Yes you need to configure on PIX, as well as you need to specify in your Client also.
You can just go through this link,
