What would be the main reason for vtp client failing to update? It has the right domain name and a lower revision number. The server mode switch is directly connected. The client side, a 3640 router, has just an ip address, and the server side, a 3550 switch is set to mode dynamic desirable. Why might be the problem?

Yes, it is. Up to this point, none of the vlans from that site have ever been needed elsewhere, but I'm on a project now to change that. Ip connectivity has been fine, but now I need it to pass vlan info.

Unless the 3640 router has a switch module installed and the connection from the 3640 to the 3550 is setup as trunk it does not use vtp .Normally a trunk between a router and a switch is forced on thus does not use vtp .

So is there any way to pass vlan informatin through this router?

Hi
No as the layer 2 broadacst domains are not allowed to span from the layer 3 devices.
Thanks
