VTP Server-Client-Trans !!!

Rajdeep Parmar

Hi All,

Secinario :  PC1 -- SW1 --  SW2 -- SW 3 -- PC2

SW1 - Server ,  SW2- Trans , SW3- Client

Vlan - 10,20 on swithces.

1)  I have created  SW1 - Server ,  SW2- Trans , SW3- Client & created  Vl 10,20 on SW1 but not updating Vlan on SW3- client Switch. ???  why  ??  might be bcoz of SW2 is trans mode !!! it should bcoz SW2 will not update it's own DB but pass that info to other client SW's.

2) What I did , just change the mode on SW2 - trans to Client & working fine.& able to ping Pc1 to PC2 !!!! ???

3) Again , I changed that mode back to Trans mode on SW2. still  I can ping Pc1 to PC2 !!!! Bcoz,  I can see Vl 10 & 20 in that Vlan DB in trans mode.

4) Now, just removed , Vl 10 , 20 from SW2 - trans mode & not able to ping Pc1 to PC2 !!!!

Can any one please explain briefly on it ??? why it' happening ??

Thanks in advance..

Thanks,

Raj

Thanks & regards, Rajdeep Parmar

Because you are using Sw2 as a transit vlan between server and client switches.  If you delete 10,20 on Sw2 the switch has no way to tag the data from those vlans across the trunks . It thus gets dropped on the floor. The vlan database  and what is allowed across the trunks are 2 different things.

You still have to manually create those vlans on Sw 2 if you want traffic to flow between Sw1 and 3 .

Hi,

Try to put VTP version to 2 on all your switchs.

the command if you don't remember : "vtp version 2"

I remember something about switch in transparent mode doesn't forward when they are in version 1

For the ping problem, glen.grant gave the answer
