First digit, 1/X/X, means it's either 1st Switch or Module/Blade.

Last digit, X/X/1, means it's the first port.

And what about the middle digit. X/0/X

Sub-slot.

Exactly how the digits map out vary somewhat from platform to platform, and what the actual modules installed are. For example, in stacks the first digit is the stack member. In VSS clusters, the first digit is the VSS chassis number.

In general it's a hierarchy, from general to specific.

Gigabit Interface 1/0/1 indicates

1st module of the switch and its port number 0/1

What is the meaning of the middle 0?

I knew the answer later. But I do not know how to delete the question before. So I decide to answer my own question. If someone knows how to delete the comments before , please tell me.

0 stands for #0 slot. And somebody will ask "Why are my all FastEthernet interfaces called FastEthernet 0/0/X, and not  FastEthernet 0/1/X, or any other number?" That's because your device is non-modular, or switches and routers that have no extra slots, have only one slot, slot 0. So all interfaces will be in slot 0, such as FastEthernet 0/0 or FastEthernet 0/24. Devices that have expansion slots also have slot 0, that is their built in ports. When you start plugging in modules, they become slots 1,2,3….and so on.

Hello @Gilbert Wong ,

your understanding is correct in the case of access layer switches that can install an uplink module the ports of the uplink module are labelled GI1/1/1 or Ten1/1/1.

To be noted in some models the name of uplink interface to be configured depends on the effective optic you have installed.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
