What is Excess defer frames

Hi, I have a big amount of xmit-err and outdiscard packets on an interface (with show interfaces counters errors).

When I do a show controllers ethernet-controller, I see a big amount of excess defer frames, not deferred frames.

I've seen on the doc that a deferred frame is delayed but finally forwarded, but what is the difference with an excess defer frames

Thanks,

Hi Jeremy,

Excess defer frame: The number of frames that are not sent after the time exceeds the maximum-packet time.

Reference link: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/software/release/3se/int_hw_components/command_reference/b_int_3se_3850_cr/b_int_3se_3850_cr_chapter_010.html

Hi,

Thank you for your answer. So the excess defer frames are delayed the maximum packet time, the deferred frames are delayed twice the max packet time, but are they finally sent ?

Hi Jeremy,

Usually this counter would be the same as output drops, if the packets exceed the maximum-packet time, those will be discarded (not sent).

What is "maximum-packet time"? is it related with TTL?
