It is very confusing and I am looking forward to a solution.
The fastethernet port can't be seen in the "show version" output, while I can see it with other command. When I connect the port in the LAN, the router can't be reached from hosts.
The outputs of the commands are listed in the attachment.

There is no attachment so it is difficult to diagnose your problem. What does show up in show version? and what command shows the FastEthernet that does not show up in show version?

Rick
I tried to upload the attachment. However, I met with "internal server error". I don't know whether this is common in CISCO's web site, for this was the first time to put message in this forum.
I will try later.
Thank you very much for your reply.

can you just paste the output of "show version" and "show ip interface brief" command so that we have some idea of the problem?

The problem is solved. I feel very relieved.
There is something wrong with the IOS to match the hardware. I paste "show version" commands here. The first is the IOS that causes the problem. The second one is the IOS which is working well with the router. Please pay attention to the compiling date and auther.
Thank you all for your generous warmth.

Wei,
I think its the onboard FE interface you are talking about not the FE module on the router.IF yes, what happens when you reload the router. Check the bootingt sequence of the router and figure out if its lists somehting about the FE interface. Do you get a link light on the FE interface when you connect it to switch. If you are connecting a PC on the router, you need a cross over cable.
To diagnose the problem, where it is a software issue or a hardware issue, I would suggest to first upload another IOS on the router probably the one that you are ruuning on a different router. Check after upgrading does it resolve the issue.
If it still unchanged I think it will be some hardware related problem.Opdn a TAC case and troubleshoot it with them.

Thanks a lot, amit singh.
The problem was solved by downloading an older version IOS to the router's flash. Now it is running well. So I think this problem was caused by wrong version IOS.
By the way, what is the meaning of HTH?

singh:
It was failure of the FE port. I downloaded an older version of IOS the router and then all went well.
Thank you very much.
I list the "show version" commands of the two versions. The upper one is the one which caused trouble. The lower one is the one which pulled me out.
Please pay attention to the date of compiling.
