Hi,
I am unsure of what cables I need for my small lab. I would like to simulate a WAN I have a spare Cisco 2600 router and a spare Cisco 1600 but no cables.
I was told I could create a WAN by getting 2 serial cables and reversing one so I don't need a CSU/DSU.
Any idea what I need to get, I might just get them off ebay.
Thanks

Whuch WAN modules do you have in the 1600?

Hi, I'm not near the 1600 at the moment, all I know is it was originally on a 2mb lease line connected to a NTE device which had the fibre line connected to it which I think is just the CSU/DSU.

DTE/DCE cables:

You can also find them on eBay as you stated.
Make sure to configure clocking at one end of the link (the DCE side) to bring the point-to-point connection up.

Thanks, what config do I need to add on the DCE router?

clock rate

Great link, but does it matter which one is the DCE and which one is the DTE router, or is it up to me?
I have 2 routers set up without setting the clock ant I can ping from each side, should this happen eventhough I have yet to configure the clock?

The cable connection will determine which router will be the DCE and DTE. Most cable vendors will physically label it as such.
So, if you've configured 2 routers back-to-back serial and can ping without the clock being configured? That's odd.

That's what I thought, can I run any commands to help?
I'm going to double check.

This will tell you the cable the router has detected on its end.
On this example, the connecting cable is DTE end.
Router#sh contr | i DTE|DCE
DTE V.35 TX and RX clocks detected.
DTE V.35 clocks stopped.

Strange, I get this:
LAN-Side#sh contr | i DTE|DCE
DCE 530, no clock
DCE 530, no clock

Please post the show interface from both end of this link.

...and back-to-back is the term for the DTE-DCE crossover in this case?
Thanks Edison
