WS-C2960S-F24PS-L

Hello All,

Issue with Cisco switch 2960.This device is less than 6months old in my network(though never connected on it through console) and one fine day

we wanted to configure a vlan on it but to our surprise the console connection only give us some funny characters.Going through Cisco forum,i came

across a similar problem .Mr.Leo mention changing baud rate setting to different values and that was helpful to some people. For my case, i change baud rate setting from 110 to 115200 am still having thesame garbage.

This most certainly looks like a baud rate issue or console cable/serial-to-usb adapter issue if you have one.

The baud should be 9600 by default.

Hello Zdesingstudio,

Thanks for your reply but am very sure that the console cable is working perfectly good and i have change the baud rate from 110 all the way to 115200 still having thesame garbage....

I always have error whenever i use baud rate above 115200

I used both secureCRT and hyperterminal.........

With the following details.......

COM ----- 1

Baud rate ------ 9600

Data bits ----- 8

Parity ------ None

Stop bit ------ 1

I think this is default configs

If you have the console cable connected with those 9600-8-N-1 settings outlined above, can you read the text during a reboot of the switch?  Also, since it is a 2960S switch, have you tried using the built-in USB to RS232 adapter and USB vs console cable (drivers needed and obtainable through Cisco with CCO login)?

Hello Casanavep,

Thanks for the help. With the default settings i can't read the text .I used the inbuilt-in RS232.The console cable is OK.

This does look like either a baud rate or parity issue.  Cisco default for new equipment is 9600, no parity, 8 bits.   However, if it had a modem for support, it's possible it was set to another speed and /or duplex - but I would expect you would see different "junk" as you change speeds.

1.  Does your console (i.e. laptop)  work properly on other Cisco gear you have?  Rule that out first.

2.  Try 9600-e-7-1 or 9600-odd-7-1

3.  Do you (or a vendor) have any telnet/ssh access at all, if in production?

4.  If not in production, bring up in ROMMON mode, and see if the characters are working properly there.  The "bastardization" settings may be in the config.

Hello pwwiddicombe,

Thanks for that guide lines.I have tried the default config(9600) but to no avail.I will give guide #2 a try .

3.There is no telnet/ssh configured .The was never any configuration done on it .

I tried setting the switch to default configs but still seeing the same characters.

Is it possible to boot it to ROMMON  mode with this ?
