WS-C4500X mac address-table

Hello, we have some bad network design in that we have two overlapping subnets: 192.168.2.160/29 and 192.168.2.0/24.

However, it still works for us because of the mac address-table on our WS-C4500X. For instance, traffic arrives with a destination of 192.168.2.164. It should actually be routed out an SVI interface 192.168.2.160/29, however because of previous incoming traffic, a MAC address-table entry forwards the traffic out the correct interface. I was surprised the switch functioned this way.

My question is: does a switch/router combo (swouter) look up the MAC address-table before it consults routing tables ? - I am thinking this is the only way this could have worked.

This would work in VRF.

thank you Leo, can you please elaborate a little more on how this would work in VRF ?
Regards.

One of the beauty of VRF is you can separate a network and use the same IP addressing schemes.
