Is there a way to find out which generation a content server is running?
Maybe according to the serial number?
I found this partnumber on a content server: S42300 but could not find this reference on the cisco website neither in the document: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/ps7060/ps11305/ps11318/ps11347/end_of_life_notice_c51-697470.html
If this is and 1st generation server what is the highest version that can be installed on it?
rgds, Geert.

1st generation up to s5.0;
2nd generation up to s5.3.1 which is the latest release for this hardware platform.
3rd generation uses s6.

You can check which version you have by the serial number (this is metnioend in the Release Notes, see Page 7).
First Generation serial number: 49A0xxxx
Second Generation serial number: 49A2xxxx
The versions you can go to are as mentioned by Jens above.
