Cisco Unity Connection Database restore

I have two separate Unity systems. One in my lab running 90 days at a time and used mainly for training purposes and a production Unity system out in the field I'm getting ready to install that already has the smart licensing installed. In effort to save time, I wanted to know if using the database from my lab system, could I restore my production system, with the lab database, without affecting the production system licensing? I have restored a Unity system in the past with an entirely different database (same version software of course), but I didn't have any licensing to worry about so I don't know what would have happened to the licensing if anything at all. Both Unity system are running the exact same version software 12.5.1.16900. Please advise, Thank you kindly!

If i understood Correctly, you are planning to do a restore on your productions CUC server using the Lab CUC backup.

This would be possible if they are on exact same version and if IP address, Hostnames are exactly same. In addition the his you must meet below requirements.

  1. Confirm that the IP address and hostname of the server matches the IP address and hostname of the server as it was before taking the backup.

  2. Confirm that the following settings match the values when taking the server backups:

    • Time zone
    • NTP server
    • NIC speed and duplex settings
    • DHCP settings
    • Primary DNS settings
    • SMTP hostname
    • X.509 Certificate information (Organization, Unit, Location, State, and Country)
  3. Confirm that the security password of the server matches the security password of the server as it was before taking the backup.

DRS encrypts the backup data using security password as the encryption key. If you change the security password of the Unity Connection server after the last backup was taken, you need to enter the old security password during the restore process.

  4. If any Unity Connection languages were previously installed, reinstall the same languages on the server.

If your requirement is to move data Cobras will be the choice.

Cisco Unified Backup and Restore Application Suite (COBRAS) is an application used to migrate data and messages. You can take the backup using Export tool and restore the backup data using Import tool.

For more information, download the latest version of COBRAS, and view the training videos and Help at http://www.ciscounitytools.com/Applications/General/COBRAS/COBRAS.html.

I agree with @Nithin Eluvathingal that COBRAS is an awesome tool! It is the reason that Unity migrations tend to be much easier to accomplish when you use it.

Excellent info, thank you so much. I have never heard of the COBRA app before. The SA has a built in DRS that works fine for doing backups and restores but i will try the COBRA tool as well from ciscounitytools.com. I was more concerned about my license on the production system. If i run a restore on my production system with a backup from my lab system, will that wipe out the smart licensing on the production system?

There is nothing to worry about licensing, thats the beauty of smart license. if you have any issues reregsiter the CUC with SA and you can do this by yourself.

If your requirement is to move data make use of cobras.
