hi experts,
what is the preferred and quickest way for upgrading 600 phones from Call Manager 8.5 to 10.5 (not In Place Upgrade)
- UCM 8.5
- UCCX 8.x
- Unity conn 8.6
- 600 phones and 50 UCCX agent
- concern on Security by default and ITL
Need practical guidance on best approach to do it and steps ?

Exactly what are you going to do???
Migrate on other servers?? You need to provide more details.
With the little you've said, use the prepare to rollback parameter to pre8.0 for that.

yes migrate to other servers for all apps (UCM, UCCX, Unity Conn 8.5) to 10.5
When you "prepare rollbacl param 8" , do I need to delete ITL after for all 600 phones to get correct ITL with version 10.5?

hi Jaime,
When read the doc, just enable "prepare rollback param 8" for this type of migration.
But then it also said not recommended to use this approach and recommend to delete ITL as the best way
Can you help me with the best practice that you always do from real experience in this case?

Hi Karen,
Before migrating to the new server, enable the rollback parameter and reset the phones. The phones will download the empty ITL file, once that's done and verified you are good to migrate phones. It will then accept the ITL from the new 10.X cluster.

to add further, when phone has ITL file, it accepts configuration only from the IPs which are included in his ITL file.
Prior to Migration , enable Prepare Cluster for Rollback to pre 8.0 Field =TRUE and phone would reset and get ITL file with blank enteries so that they can register to new CUCM 10.x

does the old cluster need to be up when migrate? what is things that broken when I use "prepare cluster rollback to pre 8" ?
- so after all migrate , I need to change it back to "false" ?
- what broken if I just leave it to "True" ?

Hi Karen,
You can set Prepare Cluster for Rollback to TRUE in CUCM 8.x so that phones can have empty ITL files.Once done, u can switch off the old cluster.
In new cluster CUCM 10.x ,you can set this parameter to TRUE(in case of any issue , you can rollback to old cluster CUCM 8) . Once phone registers successfully to CUCM 10 , then u can finally make this parameter as FALSE.

What it means by "The phones must have access to old CUCM servers only as long as it takes to download", does it mean old server need to be up ?
- what happen if I use in place migrate ?
